NOVEMBER IS DOJO KUN AWARENESS MONTH

SEI SHIN KAN DOJO KUNDojo Kun, the morals of the Dojo, are the standards that all students are encouraged to live by. There are 5 Dojo Kun, each begin with ONE! which symbolizes that each of the Dojo Kun are given equal priority. The Dojo Kun which is prominently displayed under the Kamidana (small Dojo Shrine) at the front of the Dojo, was written by the late Nakayama Masatoshi and presented to John Viol Shihan in Japan for the grand opening of our Dojo in Rochester Hills. We recite the Dojo Kun after each class in English. This month, we are encouraging students to learn and recite the Dojo Kun in Japanese. To help with this, we have made a short audio cassette tape with the Dojo Kun in both English and Japanese for you to study with. We also have 2 small Dojo Kun posters available for you to hang up at home or at your office to remind and inspire you throughout the day. The posters and cassette tape would make a great Christmas gift. For more details, please see Paula Jones Sensei as soon as possible.

DOJO KUN AUDIO CASSETTE TAPE

To commemorate November being Dojo Kun Awareness Month, Viol Shihan has produced an excellent audio cassette tape to assist you with learning the Sei Shin Kan Dojo Kun in English and Japanese. The tape is extremely well done. Side one of the tape is broken down into the following sections.
  1. Short version of Dojo Kun in English
  2. Standard long version of Dojo Kun that we recite after each class
  3. Dojo Kun in Japanese
  4. Combination review - Short version followed by standard version in English, then in Japanese.
  5. Focus on Dojo Kun in Japanese with precepts repeated twice
  6. Actual recording of the Dojo Kun being recited at the Dojo after a class.

Side two of the tape breaks down the pronunciation of the individual Japanese words in each of the tenants and gives an English translation.

Example: Hitotsu (One) Jinkaku (Character) Kansei ni (To Perfect) Tsutomuru (Strive/endeavor) Koto (The matter).

Both sides of the tape give you ample time to repeat the words or phrases after you hear them for optimal learning. You can get your copy from Jones Sensei. Tapes will be available at the Dojo Yogo Workshop.

20th ANNUAL KEIKO OSAME

A man’s indebtedness . . . is not virtue; his repayment is. Virtue begins when he dedicates himself actively to the job of gratitude. - Ruth Benedict (1887–1948), U.S. Anthropologist. The Chrysanthemum and the Sword, ch. 6 (1946).

The Japanese phrase "Ichi Nen no Sokessan" means, to finally settle all debts acquired during the year. To the serious martial artist this means that if you missed even a single day of training over the past year, for whatever reason, you are held accountable and must make amends for it. All training debts are paid at the annual Sei Shin Kan? Keiko Osame. Keiko is Japanese for practice or training. Osame (osameru) means, to conclude, wrap up, end or complete. Keiko Osame is the final ceremonial class, conducted by all traditional martial arts Dojo in Japan, to formally conclude the training schedule of the current year.

During Keiko Osame, various techniques and drills are executed in sets of 365 repetitions, one for each day of the year. The philosophy behind this is that if you missed one or more days of training during the past year, for whatever reason, by participating in Keiko Osame, you are deemed to have made up for those missed days of practice and paid the debt of gratitude you owe to the Dojo, your Sensei, Sempai and fellow students for the training you have received throughout the year. If you are a new student who started after the first of the year, Keiko Osame provides you with the opportunity to prove your spirit and sincerity towards the Dojo and your Sempai by taking the challenge to "catch up" and make up for the training you missed this current year. Thus, all debts are accounted for and everyone enters the New Year with a fresh start.

Whether you have been training a short time or a long time, Keiko Osame is sure to be one of the best and most challenging martial arts training classes you will ever attend. Keiko Osame training is designed to forge your mental, physical and spiritual energy in preparation for the upcoming year. You can compare Keiko Osame to wringing out a sponge, full and overflowing with water. The sponge must be totally wrung out in order to absorb 100% and more of its capacity again. Keiko Osame will totally wring out your mental, physical and spiritual energy in a similar fashion enabling you to enter the New Year, purged of all previous obligations, ready to absorb to your maximum capacity again and then some.

This year, the honor of leading our annual Keiko Osame has been taken on by the top Sempai and Sensei from each of the primary courses offered at the Sei Shin Kan?. Keiko Osame is a great challenge and great fun. ALL Sei Shin Kan? students, regardless of age, rank, style or experience, are highly encouraged to participate in this special and unique once a year event. Call, fax or send a message to us, now, to let us know that you will attend or even if for some unfortunate reason you are not able to participate. 2Oth ANNUAL OSOJI

Among a great many annual traditional events in Japanese culture, Osoji (great cleansing) is one of the essential preparations for the New Year. It is not merely a literal thorough cleaning of objects and areas, but is also a profound symbolic mental, physical and spiritual cleansing/purification ritual. For the martial artist, a Dojo Osoji is an opportunity to "wipe the slate clean" of all negative things encountered during the past year and enter the New Year in a renewed and purified state.

The symbolic cleansing of the Dojo can be compared to Samurai sword making and polishing. The samurai embodied in the sword their supreme conception of honor and manhood. As one writer said, "In the icy steel, born of fire, they saw revealed the mystery of life indivisible from that of death. Its severity taught them the virtue of that self-control which calmly prepares for a mighty struggle. In the untarnished face of the crystalline blade they beheld both purity and chastity, inseparable from true loyalty". Only the most highly polished blades can reflect the moral state and commitment to self perfection of the swordsman.

You, your family members and your friends are invited to attend and participate in the annual Sei Shin Kan 1998 Dojo Osoji. At the completion of the Osoji, it is my honor to perform the special Yagyu Shingan Ryu Cleansing & Purification Ceremony with a sword. After the ceremony, there will be some demonstrations by our staff and student members and various achievement awards will be given out. Traditional Japanese food and beverages will be available. Please call, fax or contact me now at the number below to let me know you will be in attendance, or if for some unfortunate reason you will not be able to participate. I look forward to bringing in and sharing a prosperous New Year with you.

Sincerely,

John M. Viol
